Fleet Captain Frederic Antimony could not tear his eyes from the sight. Filling his vision were the starships of the Emperor’s Own Ninth Starmada; hundreds of craft, large and small, capable of reducing the most well-defended surface facility to rubble. Never since the founding of the Empire had a Starmada failed to achieve its objective; and only once before had one been defeated in defense of a system.

“Make that twice,” thought Antimony, cracking a mirthless grin.

The countless stars looked in on Antimony; but the sensors informed him that many—far too many—were not stars at all, but renegade starships, come to eliminate the Empire’s last stronghold in this sector. And there was no way for Antimony to stop them.

“At least we can make it interesting,” he muttered, and his smile grew broader, just as a member of the bridge crew announced that she had lost contact with one of the pickets.

The battle had begun...

Starmada is a miniatures board game of starship combat. At its most basic level, players take command of space fleets in a general attempt to reduce each other to just so much space junk. At its most advanced, the game can be customized to breathe life into any science fiction background that players might imagine.

Novices shouldn’t fret; the core set of rules has been designed with simplicity and ease of play in mind, accessible even to beginners. On the other hand, seasoned veterans should find the concise nature of the rules quite refreshing. It allows players to concentrate on the finer points of squashing their opponents rather than arguing about rules interpretations, without sacrificing any of the flavor or excitement of more complex games.

Simple, but not simplistic, is the guiding principle.

The basic rules are very simple. Appendices add options, but even "more complicated" rules are, fundamentally, kept simple, so the increase in complexity created by adding a rule is very, very small. Adding all the options makes a medium-complexity wargame that is still very easy to play. I was impressed at how hard the designers worked at this. New rules add tactical options without overwhelming the game, while the basic game still has a wealth of potential tactics, in ship selection and gameplay.

Just to add my $.02 -- I've really been enjoying Starmada. The most flexible and customizable starship combat system I've ever seen, and at a great price.

--javelin98

Starmada is well worth buying - and I say this as a publisher of a not-quite-competing product. For space combat, it's effectively supplanted Full Thrust for me when I want something that's "build and bash".

--Ad Astra Games

Overall, we think it beats FT hands down. So there.

--Steve Oram, Brigade Models

I recently ran a [sci-fi RPG] ... but I always disliked the starship combat rules that came with the game. So I tinkered and I tweaked and sure enough, I was able to adapt Starmada to the RPG and integrate it without problem. Just wanted to say that ... a little effort to adapt Starmada to your game can garner some pretty cool results.

I do appreciate that it has a ship construction model at its core, so that it isn't as prone to the wild craziness that comes with a Trip to Munchkinland in other game systems where the sky is the limit.

--Tyrel Lohr

I never cease to be amazed by what this game can do...:)

--Alex Hanna

Immediately after I first picked up the Starmada Compendium, I was impressed with the versatility and elegance of the rule set. ... As my game group gathered for our regular session last Sunday, Starmada was met with the customary scepticism with which my group typically greets new game systems. After an afternoon of gaming, however, we had universally annointed your game our new favorite.

-- Galen Theis

Easily the best tabletop starship combat sim available on the Internet ... an easy-to-learn game designed with the philosophy that fighting in space should be fun, not tedious.

-- Tony Bruno

... the best starship combat system around ... The main feature of Starmada that I like is the simplicity of the system that doesn't sacrifice richness of play. With this system, you can easily send fleets of 30+ ships or more into combat and not have too much trouble recordkeeping. Try doing that with SFB (my head hurts just thinking about it) ... For me and my group, the real fun of Starmada is constructing your own ships ... There's nothing more fun than watching a fleet of my own creation win a battle.

-- Eric Garvue

I would describe Starmada as the GURPS of space combat systems ... the generic nature of Starmada allows for space battles between any level of ship technologies and methodologies.

-- Chad Wilson

Objectively I can say that a while ago "great generic space rules" were always synonimous with FT, but now I think that while FT will always remain a classic, S:X has somewhat taken over the title.

--Dr. Evil

I like it. While I have a few quibbles with design choices (like limiting ships to three batteries), I'm impressed with the breadth of the game. Especially, the level of design and customization possible.

-- Mike Ryan

The rules are well written and allow a group of friends to play a game to completion in several hours.

-- Adam Newsom

...the best set [of shipbuilding rules] I've seen, leading to very balanced battles and the ability to make just about any ship you can imagine.

-- Demian Rose
